ABOUT THE PLAY
Auto-da-Fé is an intense and haunting exploration of repression, desire, and psychological torment. Set in 1940s New Orleans, the play follows Eloi, a sexually repressed postal worker who lives under the watchful eye of his overbearing mother. Haunted by his own desires and consumed by guilt, he perceives the city as a den of corruption and sin. Desperate for purity, he spirals toward a tragic and fiery resolution.
A gripping study of inner conflict and societal oppression, this lesser-known gem by Tennessee Williams offers rich, challenging roles for dedicated actors.
ROLES AVAILABLE
Eloi Duvenet (mid-20s to mid-40s)
A frail, gaunt man with feverish dark eyes. Eloi struggles with the trauma of confronting his long-repressed desires, believing himself to be "infected" by homosexuality. He becomes consumed by the need to purge his so-called affliction, driving him toward a devastating act of self-destruction.
Madame Duvenet (60s and up)
Eloi’s mother. A frail yet imposing older woman who runs a boarding house. Cold, practical, and deeply religious.
Actors must be able to perform a 1940s New Orleans accent.
